Experiential Learning Through Inquiry in Elementary Classrooms

CISGZ CIS

"Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience."

Experiential learning through inquiry is the process of learning through experience, and it emphasizes the student's role in the learning process. It's an idea that allows students to remove themselves from of their comfort zones and digest what has been learnt during concrete, exploratory practices.

Elementary education is an early stage of education level and it provides the foundation that paves the way for students’ achievement in the future. At CIS, our teachers create varied opportunities to connect learning to real-world contexts, tasks and questions, allowing students to inquire and seek out answers by themselves. Inquiry is a core feature of the Alberta (Canada) Curriculum, and this is embedded in all the programs of study.

CIS students from Grade 1 to Grade 6 are provided instruction in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and a variety of subjects such as Music, PE and Art. Students benefit from their daily hands-on based classes and improve their core competencies via holistic teaching practices. Here’s a snapshop of some of our students' learning experiences in elementary school!

Working together is a key goal for academic success. Grade 1 and Kindergarten came together on an inquiry project to engage students in the Design Cycle. Design Thinking is a powerful tool to develop the creative confidence to respond to new challenges.

·       Ability to embrace failure, risk-taking and develop persistence.

·       Ability to identify and define problems to actionable solutions — in innovative ways.

·       Ability to learn, unlearn and relearn and ‘nothing is too big to solve’ attitude.

·       Understanding the value of collaboration and feedback.

English Language Arts & Science

We began our project by reading the book “How To Catch a Star” by Oliver Jeffers. From here students engaged in rich discussions of what they know about the sky and stars and began to think of ways on how to help the little boy in the story. Working in groups students created a plan of how to create a “Star Catcher”. They listed materials they would need and drew a diagram. After planning we set off to the Idea Lab to begin our creations! As students worked together they quickly began to modify and discuss what they needed to change from their original plan and how to make it better. It was amazing to see so many different inventions and how excited all the students were to share their designs and also talk about the challenges that occurred. After sharing our designs with each other we reflected on the process and talked about what went well and what could have been better. Students were fully engaged in the learning process and outcomes in Language Arts and Science were learned such as reading comprehension and writing and seasons. The students show an understanding that it was the process of creating the Star Catcher and not the end product that was important. The world is full of endless problems waiting to be solved by the curious minds in the most creative and innovative ways!

Maths

Within math students are addition superstars! Students worked on mastering different strategies to solve equations. These strategies include: counting with our fingers, drawing out pictures, dotting ten frames, using number lines, counters and snap cubes.

Social Studies

Social studies had us walking around our school and looking to see what is in our community by CIS. We also went to our front gate to take a look  at the different places around the school in our community. We discussed what places in our communities are important and started planning our next group project where students will work in groups to build their very own community. Students will use the idea lab to design, build, decorate and label their communities.

Grade 2 has been doing a wide variety of cross-curricular learning to get the most out of our learning time together. Continued work on our social and self-regulation skills has been paying off with kindness shown and focussed on-task classwork. We also got to celebrate 100 days in class by bringing in a collection of things and wearing cool T-shirts. The two classes created centres for the students to express their creativity with the number 100!

English Language Arts

We have completed a novel study on Charlotte's Web where we examined story elements, character analysis, cause and effect, and compared and contrasted projected elements of the story into the real-world analysis. Students presented this in the form of a 'lap book' to promote a multi-sensory experience and a great visual representation of everything the students have been learning. Students responded personally to the more significant curricular outcomes in a variety of ways.

Maths

Students have been practicing and exploring their strategies for adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. They are noticing that their strategy may change as they use different materials and the types of problems they need to solve. They are continuing to build their communication skills to describe their mathematical thinking.

Social Studies

Students have virtually traveled to Iqaluit in social studies and learned how the climate affects a community, how the Inuit live, eat and dress. We are using cross-curricular projects to help students build igloos and create art that celebrates the Northern landscape of Nunavut and Inuit traditions of Inuksuk.

Science

The grade twos have been exploring magnetism, how a magnet interacts with various materials, other magnets. They can demonstrate that magnets have poles and how that affects magnetic objects to attract or repel.

English Language Arts

This week in Language Arts, we will learn about conjunctions.  A conjunction is the glue that holds words, phrases and clauses (both dependent and independent) together. There are three different kinds of conjunctions -- coordinating, subordinating, and correlative -- each serving its own, distinct purpose, but all working to bring words together. We will also begin our poetry unit this week by learning about acrostic and shape poems. An acrostic poem is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase. Typically, the first letters of each line are used to spell the message, but they can appear anywhere. A shape poem is a poem that is shaped like the thing it describes. The shape adds to the meaning of the poem.

Maths

In the grade 6 math classes, the students just finished a unit on Measurement. In this unit, the students learned about angles. They learned the different types of angles (acute, obtuse, right, reflex, straight), how to measure angles and how to draw angles using protractors. They also developed the skill to estimate angle measurements without using protractors, as well as rapidly identifying the type of angle it is simply by looking at it. As a culminating activity, the students got to play with various type of angles by creating a ping pong trick shot. Their task was to have a ping pong ball bounce through different angles before landing inside of a cup. It was challenging but fun, and the students really enjoyed the satisfaction of succeeding in this task.

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies, we will learn about the ancient Athenian government timeline. Athens has been continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years, becoming the leading city of Ancient Greece in the first millennium BC; its cultural achievements during the 5th century BC laid the foundations of western civilization. In ancient Athens, they used direct democracy or pure democracy is a form of democracy in which people decide on policy initiatives directly. This differs from the majority of currently established democracies, which are representative democracies.

Science

Recently in science, the grade 6 students have been learning about the different parts of an airplane. Earlier in the school year, we learned how airplanes fly using Bernoulli’s principle. With that in mind, the students explored even further by learning how airplanes maneuver and maintain stability during flight. They were able to recognize different parts on a plane, learn what the components of these parts are, and discover how these parts provide stability and control to aircraft flight. Students demonstrated their learning by making their own airplane models. Some made them using various materials that were available to them in the IDEA LAB, while others chose to graphically make them, and print them out on 3-D printers. In the end, they were able to construct amazing airplanes that clearly displayed the various parts on a plane that they learned throughout the unit.
